Difference between "rise" and "raise"Both these verbs describe an elevation of something by something or somebody or something but the use is not the same. We use rise to express a passive motion which happen usually to nonliving objects or to alive entity but without their intention. We use raise to express an active move created by somebody. Examples: Smoke rises from the chimney. The economy of China is rising rapidly. but Paul raised his hand. Peter raises four children. I have to raise my price because my costs rise. While raise is regular, rise is irregular verb with these forms rise / rose /risen. Readers' Opinions

Pronunciation of English soundsKnowledge of correct pronunciation of words is in my opinion more important than knowledge of spelling. When you need to write a word, you can usually look to a dictionary. When you need to say the word, you have time for searching rarely. Lots of people learn only spelling of words but, even worse, a lot of them compose English words of sounds of their native language. In my opinion, this is serious flaw. Correct pronunciation is the part of language equally to grammar and vocabulary. Here you find list of English sounds, their IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) symbols, SAMPA (Speech Assessment Methods Phonetic Alphabet) codes and examples of occurence.
Voiced consonants are produced by air flowing from lungs through vocal cords and mouth. Voiceless consonants are produced only by mouth without an involvement of vocal cords. Readers' Opinions

The difference between "so" and "such"These two words are used to emphasize a meaning of following words. The rule where you should use which one is supposed to be a difficult question which is not easy to explain. However, I thing it is not such a mystery. The "such" is adjective and it is used to highlight characteristics of objects so it must be connected with a noun. The "so" is adverb so it is usually connected with another adverb or an adjective. Examples: She is such a lazy girl. She is so lazy. He is such a fool. He drives so fast. Those are such bautiful houses. Those houses are so bautiful. Readers' Opinions |
